Waiting on the Lord
In the scriptures there are a number of places where it talks about waiting on the Lord. In my Book of Mormon reading today, I was in 2 Nephi 6, which is the words of Jacob to the people of Nephi. He first quotes Isaiah (49:22-26) - the last phrase of which is this: "...for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me."
Later, in verse 13 (of 2 Nephi 6), it says, "...For the people of the Lord are they who wait for him; for they still wait for the coming of the Messiah."
As I pondered and cross-referenced the term, "waiting", I came across Doctrine and Covenants 98:1-2 where the Lord is comforting Joseph Smith and other leaders who were concerned with the persecutions in Missouri. These verses say, "...fear not, let your hearts be comforted; yea, rejoice evermore, and in everything give thanks; Waiting patiently on the Lord, for your prayers have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth..."
The thoughts that came to me as I studied this were these:
How often are people willing to wait in line for long periods of time to get on a 1 minute roller coaster, to get into a store for a sale, to camp out for seats at a game, to purchase the latest gadget, etc.?! And yet, we get frustrated when we pray and get no immediate answer. Or we take the time to ask the Lord something, but take no time to WAIT on Him for an answer?! Have we spent as much time on our knees showing the Lord our patience and desire for that answer as we do waiting in line for that 1 minute ride?
I am not saying that is necessary every time, but I think it hits home (at least for me) the point that often we lack patience for the Lord's answer and help. But, clearly, if we do we are blessed for it.
Think about Joseph Smith. He knew there were these golden plates of scripture. He had found them, seen them, etc. But it took 4 years to get them. A pretty incredible thing, if you think about it.
I know in my own personal life I am going through a situation where I am needing to wait patiently on the Lord, while working hard to do all I can to make things work. It is very difficult because I so badly need and want an answer. But I know that if I do all I can, and wait patiently on the Lord, I will be blessed in incredible ways. I probably need to spend a bit more time showing that patience through time on my knees, time spent doing His work by serving others, and doing as he says, to "...rejoice evermore, and in everything give thanks."
Have a great day today! Love.
